About the BCLG

The Beach Canal Lighthouse Group (BCLG) is a not-for-profit organization incorporated under the Ontario Historical Society (OHS). Its goal is to bring together people who are interested in the preservation and interpretation of the Burlington Canal Light Station, comprising the 1858 stone tower and the adjacent 1857 brick keeper’s cottage.

In 2017, the BCLG accepted a proposal put forward by the Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) to secure ownership of the property from the federal government and then subsequently negotiate a lease with the BCLG.

Our mutual goals:
• Restore both the lighthouse and lightkeeper’s cottage, with public access provided to both structures;
• Construct a visitors’ interpretive centre combined with a maritime museum, in association with the Hamilton Port Authority, to interpret both the history of the light station, canal, and the development of Hamilton Harbour as a major port.
• Collect and display documents and artefacts relating to the above.
